Late musician Oliver Tree will receive a suitably unconventional farewell on Saturday, July 25, during a celebration of life at UC Santa Cruz’s Quarry Amphitheater. A post shared through Tree’s Instagram says the event will honor Oliver Tree Nickell with live performances, personal videos and messages from his relatives and friends. The program and livestream will begin at 7:30 p.m. PST. Attendance is limited, but supporters unable to be there can watch the ceremony online.
The three hour broadcast will feature previously unseen footage from the entertainer, who became recognized for his eccentric music videos and widely shared online clips. Scheduled speakers include DJ and producer Diplo, YouTuber Ethan Klein, Mexican influencer Ethan Mercury and influencer and boxer Logan Paul.
Chicago DJ and producer Whethan, one of Tree’s close friends, revealed last week that he would delay his scheduled Las Vegas appearances at Shambhala this weekend so he could attend the remembrance.
Reflecting Tree’s humorous personality, promotional artwork for the gathering says there will be separate caskets representing each of his unusual characters, along with musical performances and other tributes.
Tree died at age 32 in a helicopter accident in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on June 14, which also claimed five other lives. He had been traveling across South America for his World First World tour when the crash happened. His record label, Atlantic Records, released a message following his death. “We are shocked and saddened by Oliver’s untimely passing. He was a remarkable talent — a gifted artist and songwriter who forged a thoroughly unique and captivating style,” it read. “Oliver was endlessly inventive and a true original. He was a cherished friend to many and a beloved member of our music family. He profoundly loved music and his fans, and his absence will be deeply felt. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Oliver’s family, friends, and team, as well as the families and loved ones of all those affected by this tragic event.”
Money raised through Saturday’s memorial will go toward the foundation and endowment Tree established before his passing, Dr. Oliver Tree’s Extremely Epic Grant for Baby Geniuses.
