Hey, sexy ladies! PSY’s worldwide hit “Gangnam Style” has officially become the first K pop video to achieve an enormous YouTube record.
By Monday, July 20, nearly 14 years after the video first appeared on the platform, the playful visual filled with memorable dance moves had surpassed 6 billion views. No other K pop music video has reached that total, further highlighting PSY’s role in helping the genre enter the global mainstream before artists such as BTS and BLACKPINK achieved international success.
Directed by Cho Soo-Hyun, the visual follows the South Korean star as he creates mayhem in different locations while performing his famous “Gangnam Style” dance. The clip produced several unforgettable moments, including PSY dancing alone inside a horse stable and singing toward the camera while positioned between another dancer’s legs.
“Gangnam Style” reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2012 and has remained one of the most influential viral hits in music history. During the year it arrived, the video became YouTube’s first upload to collect 1 billion views. That achievement made it the original entry in the Billion Views Club, which now includes Justin Bieber’s “Baby,” Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space,” Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” and many other successful pop videos.
Since PSY established the record, several more K pop videos have joined the exclusive group. They include BTS’ “Dynamite” and “Butter,” along with BLACKPINK’s “Pink Venom” and “How You Like That.”
PSY has not released a new album for several years, with his most recent record, PSY 9th, arriving in 2022.
