Jennifer Lopez is embracing heartbreak with a perspective that is far different from what many people expect.
During an appearance on Subway Takes on Tuesday, June 30, the singer and actress shared her belief that the end of a relationship should be viewed as something worth celebrating because it marks the beginning of personal growth and a new chapter.
“Breakups are not a failure. I honestly feel like it’s a launchpad into your next best self,” she said. “We should have a party when we break up. People should say, ‘You broke up? Congratulations,’ because one, you made a decision. Two, it was probably the best thing for everybody.”
The multi talented entertainer acknowledged that she has experienced heartbreak from both sides of a relationship, but believes the person whose heart gets broken often walks away with the greatest opportunity to grow.
“If you’re the one who’s being heartbroken, you’re the winner,” Lopez said. “Because if you go around your life and you’re breaking hearts, let’s say, you’re a loser. I’ve been on both sides. We all do that. But if you’re that person, you’re never learning anything.”
She continued, “I just feel like the biggest growth spurts I’ve had emotionally, mentally, psychologically have always come from a heartbreak. And that’s not just in romantic relationships, that’s in work heartbreaks.”
Throughout her career, Lopez has experienced several high profile relationships and breakups. Most recently, she finalized her divorce from actor Ben Affleck in 2024. The pair were first engaged in the early 2000s before ending their relationship in 2004, only to reunite in 2021 and eventually marry.
The “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” singer has also been married to Marc Anthony, Ojani Noa, and Cris Judd. She shares her teenage twins, Max and Emme, with Anthony. Lopez was also engaged to former MLB star Alex Rodriguez, but the couple ended their engagement in 2021 after dating for roughly four years.
Over the years, Lopez has also been romantically linked to Drake, Diddy, actor Casper Smart, and, more recently, comedian Brett Goldstein.
On the music front, Lopez recently joined forces with Brazilian DJ Alok for the upbeat single “Everything’s Fine,” which was released on June 26. Earlier this year, the Bronx native also collaborated with David Guetta on the track “Save Me Tonight.”
