For Joesph Blue, songwriting is a cathartic experience. His latest track, “Heaven’s Got A View” is a love letter to his deceased wife. The emotional relevance of the song is naturally high but at a positive level. It’s a country song that evokes feelings of warmness, comfort and happiness.
Joesph Blue’s previous release was a track titled “Summer Nights Goodbye.” This song recapped the night his wife passed in detail and was a song he wrote to honor her. Just over two years later, he was able to write “Heaven’s Got A View” and he feels like the amount of time it took was needed because he is fully able to accept that she is gone now. He’s able to picture her in Heaven, looking down on him.
“It took me a lot of time and a lot of thinking to get to this point…the song is me basically checking in on her and my vision of what she’s doing up there.” he said.
Throughout the song, Joesph’s lyrics contain vivid imagery that mentions clouds, sunsets, the breeze and other small but beautiful, peaceful and important things we experience on Earth. This is because in his eyes, the best day we can have on Earth is how it always is in Heaven. A mindset like this continues to give him hope and strength as he pursues through life every day and continues to reflect on the wonderful moments he had with his wife as he sits in life’s stillness.
Connecting with listeners is a top priority for Joesph Blue. While the song was primarily written in honor of his wife, he also wanted the lyrics to be applicable for other family members he has lost and anyone his listeners may have lost. “Heaven’s Got A View” is a song written with intentionality and detail but with accessibility for multiple people who connect to it differently.
“Since I have lost other family members, I like to think about them all being in Heaven together. I like to keep the names out of the song so anyone can connect to it.” he said.
In addition to connecting to his audience lyrically, Joesph also likes to connect to them tonally. The arrangement and production of a song has just as much impact on the listeners as the lyrics do and in some cases, the production can take away from the weight of the lyrics. There are multiple cases like this throughout the decades with songs that sound happy but actually have sad lyrics. In Joesph’s case, he wanted this song to be heard during the days where the weather is nice and people can see the beautiful nature based things he mentions in the song outside as they listen to it.
“Once Memorial Day passes, people are ready for summer and the summer time is when people are happier. I did ‘Summer Nights Goodbye’ first to introduce people to who I was and what my story is. Now, on ‘Heaven’s Got A View’ I’m still telling that story but in a more clearly uplifting way.” he said.
This emotional relevance is what drives the songs Joesph writes and his range within it is a testament to his songwriting skills. His next track is all about his love for his home state of Louisiana and he wants other people from there to be able to relate to all the things within it. This one will take the uplifting atmosphere to an even higher level because of the community based approach of the track. While his other two songs evoke a sense of private intimate listening, the next track takes pride in being communal.
Joesph’s strive for an emotional connection through his music also has a direct influence on his unique release strategy. For many artists, the typical approach is to release 2-3 singles then an album. However, Joesph’s goal is to have multiple singles across his discography so people can get directly to what they want when they want it. They don’t have to remember a specific album a song is on and then remember the name of the song too.
“I’m not going to release an album because I feel like each of my songs needs to be heard individually. I don’t want to force it to be grouped with other songs. For some artists, they’ll have an album with one great song and ten other subpar songs just to make an album. I want every song to stand on its own and be heard on its own.” he said.
Joesph is an artist who knows how he wants to distribute his music and understands the other technical aspects of his music career. He believes in putting in the work himself to accomplish his goals instead of relying on others for everything. He wants to be able to do things himself or have the knowledge to do them so he can make sure someone else is doing them right.
This intentionality with understanding exactly how he wants to run his music career comes from the strategy Joesph learned from his father who was also a songwriter. This brings everything full circle as he continues to write music with emotional relevance and sentimental intentionality.
“Heaven’s Got A View” by Joesph Blue is available on streaming services now.
