Coachella, CA – Some lucky fans will be ringing in the new year with Lil Wayne. The illustrious rapper, E-40, Shaq (who performs as DJ Diesel) and others are set to headline Day One 22, a New Year’s Eve event put on by Coachella Crossroads and Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians.
Tickets can be found on Live Nation, but the ticket seller was recently sued by the Coachella Music Festival and concert promoter Goldenvoice. The pair filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against Live Nation over Day One 22, which was originally advertised as “Coachella Day One 22”, accusing them of “intentionally trading on the goodwill” of the legendary music festival by using their namesake to sell tickets. Day One 22 is being hosted by Coachella Crossroads, a separate company that isn’t affiliated with the annual music and arts festival.
As of Tuesday (December 28), Live Nation was allowed to continue to sell tickets to the event as long as they dropped the Coachella moniker. The California festival also filed a temporary restraining order against Live Nation to try to prevent them from selling tickets to the event at all, but the court rejected that plea.
“As a community and nation who reside in Coachella, California, we are equally thrilled that our outdoor venue, Coachella Crossroads, will be able to continue operation under its given name” Tribal Chairman Darrell Mike said in a press release. “The strong-arming of Goldenvoice and its parent company AEG to take reign over a name of a region and businesses who choose to identify with it is disrespectful to small and large business operations, those under their employ and the indigenous people who live within the valley.”
The Coachella music festival hasn’t taken place since 2019 because of COVID-19 concerns, but in the past has included massive headliners such as Childish Gambino, Khalid, Kid Cudi, Janelle Monáe and more.
The Day One 22 event will take place on Thursday (December 30) in Coachella, California starting at 7 p.m. and will end around 2 a.m. the following morning.
