Artist Spotlight: Brook Lynn
Before AGT, Brook Lynn had already built a large international audience through her performances online. Her rendition of Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” generated more than 11 million views on TikTok, adding to a growing collection of performances that showcased both the power of her voice and her ability to make familiar songs feel personal.
“In this exclusive Q&A, Brook Lynn opens up about the stories behind the music, lessons learned along the way, and what keeps their passion alive.
Outverge: What’s the most challenging aspect of being a song artist?
Brook Lynn: For me, it's probably getting out of my own head. I've struggled with anxiety for a long time, and sometimes I can be my own biggest obstacle. I love singing, but being on stage and having people watching me hasn't always been easy. Even now, there are moments when I doubt myself. I'm learning that I don't have to get rid of all my fears before I can do the things I love.
Outverge: What’s your strategy for promoting a new album or single?
Brook Lynn: I think the most important thing is making sure people connect with the music and the story behind it. I love sharing little moments from the creative process, whether that's singing something in the studio, making a video, or performing a song in a different setting. I don't want everything to feel like promotion. I'd rather people discover my music because something about it genuinely makes them feel something.
Outverge: What role does your management team play in your success?
Brook Lynn: My team plays a really important role, especially because there are so many things involved in being an artist beyond just making music. They help me see possibilities that I might not always see for myself and encourage me to take opportunities that sometimes feel a little scary.
Having people around me who believe in what I'm doing makes a big difference. It also allows me to focus more on the creative side and becoming a better artist.
Outverge: How do you continue to improve your musical skills and knowledge?
Brook Lynn: I sing a lot! I also love challenging myself with songs that aren't necessarily easy for me. I've learned so much from singing different artists' music because every song teaches you something new about your voice.
I'm constantly discovering things I want to improve, whether it's my technique, songwriting, or the way I connect with an audience. I don't think there's ever a point where you stop learning.
Outverge: How do you measure success in your career?
Brook Lynn: Of course, reaching more people and being able to perform on bigger stages would be amazing. But for me, success is also being able to do things I once thought were impossible.
There was a time when even singing in front of a few people felt overwhelming. Then I found myself performing on America's Got Talent. I still find that a little crazy!
I think success is being able to look back and see how much you've grown while still having things you're excited to work toward.
Outverge: What impact do you hope your music has on your listeners?
Brook Lynn: I hope people feel understood and a little less alone.
With "Love Your Enemy," I wanted to express something I've experienced myself. Sometimes the person you're fighting the hardest is yourself. You can be so critical of yourself that you forget you deserve the same kindness you give other people.
If someone listens to my music and recognizes a part of themselves in it, that means a lot to me. I don't expect a song to solve someone's problems, but maybe it can make them feel that someone understands.
Outverge: How do you handle the ups and downs of the music industry?
Brook Lynn: I'm still learning! I think one of the hardest things is not letting a disappointment make you question everything about yourself.
America's Got Talent taught me a lot about that. There were some incredible moments, but it was also emotionally overwhelming at times. You can work so hard for something and still not know how it's going to turn out.
I try to remind myself why I started singing in the first place. I genuinely love music, and that's something I don't want to lose, no matter what happens around it.
Outverge: What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received about your music?
Brook Lynn: There have been a few moments that I still can't quite believe happened.
One was when Simon Cowell said "Love Your Enemy" should be in a James Bond movie. Hearing that about a song I'd written was really special, especially on a stage like America's Got Talent.
Another moment was when Amy Lee from Evanescence commented on my performance of "Bring Me to Life." I've loved singing that song, so having her actually hear my version and say such kind things was surreal.
Those moments mean a lot because they remind me that the music is reaching people.
Outverge: How do you stay true to yourself while evolving as an artist?
Brook Lynn: I think it's about allowing yourself to grow without feeling like you have to become someone else.
For a long time, people mainly knew me through the covers I posted online. I still love singing those songs, and they've taught me so much, but I've always wanted to create my own music too.
With songs like "Love Your Enemy" and the music I'm working on now, I'm getting to show more of who I am and what I've experienced.
I'm still discovering my sound, and I think that's part of the exciting thing about being an artist. I don't want to put too many limits on what I can become. I just want whatever I create to feel like me.
