Artist Spotlight: Ciarra Cmphany

Ciarra Cmphany AKA C. Cmphany is an artist whose name is sure to catch listeners eyes before they even press play on her music. Her latest single “Boom!” is one she classifies as Pop-fusion R&B. Her goal is to bring her own special symphony to the music she writes and performs and just to the music industry itself.

We sat down with Ciarra Cmphany to talk about their creative journey, inspirations, and what’s next.

Outverge Magazine: How did you get started in the music industry?

Ciarra Cmphany: I actually released my first song in 2019, called “DC Vibe”. It was a silky, upbeat neo-soul song, and it stood for “Drink, Chill, and Vibe.” I truly enjoyed performing that song despite being the amateur that I was. It was so funky and vibey that it really made for an easy two-step on stage and got the crowd amped up with the ebbs and flows of the song. I met some people in the local scene who enjoyed my talent, and some gave me some good advice. I’ve been pretty much independent ever since. It’s been a while since I’ve dropped it, but I’m always like, “Hmmm, Remake and Master???” I guess time will tell.

Outverge Magazine: What's the best advice you've received about the music industry?

Ciarra Cmphany: I think the best advice I’ve ever received is to learn the business. There are so many opportunities for musicians, artists, and creatives to forge a path of success for themselves. Learning how to protect yourself and your investments as an entity, and your art as intellectual property, is so important. When you realize people put a lot of energy and investments into these projects to make them last the test of time, it makes you want to learn the business so your investments are protected, or you’re a liability to
work with. Be brave enough to take yourself seriously so others do as well.

Outverge Magazine: What's the biggest challenge you've faced in your career so far?

Ciarra Cmphany: I think the biggest challenge thus far has just been procuring a consistent team. There have been some circumstances where I had to choose professionalism and respect over my attachments if I knew my longevity was at stake. It’s really given me a clear perspective of the people who’ve stuck beside me, shown up for me, and continue to do honest business with me. It’s also made me stronger as a leader, and I’m grateful for that. I’m confident that I will build everything that’s meant for me.

Outverge Magazine: Have you ever had to deal with a difficult record label or manager?

Ciarra Cmphany: I’ve had to deal with some difficult situations in the past. It’s made me very stringent about how comfortable I allow myself to be. Outside of how seriously I take my music, I’m truly an ethical person who cares for others. I respect and show appreciation for the janitor, just like I would the CEO. It’s important for aspiring artists not to allow their trust to be taken advantage of or their boundaries to be constantly overstepped when you start dealing with outside parties. Empower yourself enough to walk away.

Outverge Magazine: How do you handle criticism or negative feedback on your music?

Ciarra Cmphany: I take it with a grain of salt, or like a 50 karat diamond. It all depends. Any advice that resonates with my ultimate goals, I stay very open to implementing and taking seriously. There’s a difference between constructive criticism, which is very responsive and tailored to your goals and who you are, and fear or discouragement disguised as advice. I know the difference, and I treat them accordingly.

Outverge Magazine: What's the most important thing to remember when working with producers, engineers, and other collaborators?

Ciarra Cmphany: Well, seeing as I engineer my own music and choose my producers very carefully now……lol; in all seriousness, collaboration is key, but comprehension is the cornerstone of healthy collaboration. Deal with individuals who understand the balance between what their creative control dictates behind the scenes, and what yours dictates as the face of the brand. Everyone should be doing the work to make sure those lines aren’t overstepped for one another.

Outverge Magazine: How do you stay connected with your fans and build a loyal following?

Ciarra Cmphany: I love doing giveaways and free merchandise. Right now, I’m definitely still scaling all the ways I can connect with people. I want to get more creative than what’s expected. I’m excited to create fun new ways to engage with people who love my music. Right now, I have a fun merchandise giveaway going on. Check out my Instagram and my website for more details!

Outverge Magazine: What's your favorite part about touring and performing live?

Ciarra Company:
The final looks, and being prepared with choreography. Those two things have been the most fun to experience coming to fruition, outside of all the stress of planning, preparation, the execution. There’s such an important element to eliciting emotions when you listen to a song. Being able to bring that unforgettable element of excitement to the stage is amazing. I will probably never get tired of being able to show an audience “the finished product.”

Outverge Magazine: Have you ever had to overcome a creative block or writer's block?

Ciarra Cmphany:
I have, but most times I don’t force it. I actually have an incredibly fast turnaround time for writing songs. I can write two to three in a day if I really get that burst of energy. A great way to overcome feeling stagnant in your creativity is to open up your mind to receiving something beautiful that stimulates you. Drive to that park with that meadow, go to that rooftop bar at night, and watch the skyline with a cocktail. Watch a sad movie and cry if you have to. The best way to overcome blockages to expression is to do just that. Artists are working to create things that last a lifetime. Express yourself. Let yourself feel something.
