Russell Crowe performed his much-anticipated set at Glastonbury 2024 with covers of songs by Dire Straits and Johnny Cash at the Acoustic Stage.
Yesterday afternoon (June 29), Crowe took the stage with his backing band, the Indoor Garden Party, for a full set of electric blues-rock tuneage that included original music and covers of Dire Straits’ ‘Romeo & Juliet’, Amy Shark’s ‘Psycho’, and Johnny Cash’s ‘Folsom Prison Blues’.
Crowe once performed ‘Psycho’ with Shark at an event in Australia in January 2023, where he filled in to perform the verses that were originally recorded by Blink-182‘s Mark Hoppus.
Last April, Glastonbury made the announcement of Russell Crowe’s addition to the line-up. In an interview that same month with Radio X’s Chris Moyles, Crowe revealed that, up to that point, they were required to keep their booking a secret – which was not an easy thing for his band.
“I got a group of musicians around me and they’ve been playing all of their lives,” he said. “For them to be playing at Glastonbury, they just wanted to tell somebody. But they had to keep it secret.”
For now, Crowe will soldier on with his band for a UK tour this week onwards. The Gladiator actor’s gigs will kick off at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin on July 1. From there, Crowe will make his way to Warrington, Paris, London and Leeds, before wrapping up at Eden Court in Inverness on July 26. Opening support will come from Lorraine O’Reilly on all dates. Still set to come this weekend at Glastonbury 2024 are performances from SZA, Shania Twain, Janelle Monae, The National, Two Door Cinema Club, Avril Lavigne, Justice, Nia Archives, James Blake, Alvvays, Romy and more.
Camila Cabello’s chaotic set scored a three-star rating, while Dua Lipa’s Friday headlining performance earned her four stars. IDLES and Fontaines D.C nabbed perfect five-star ratings as did the festival’s first K-pop performers SEVENTEEN.
